Core actions for building healthy relationships at work or home

Basic Principles for Healthy Relationships Medium

The Principles

  • Focus on the situation, issue or behaviour, not on the person: Solve the problem!
  • Maintain the self esteem and self confidence of the other person: Build them up, don’t tear them down!
  • Maintain good relationships with your coworkers: Leave it better than you found it!
  • Take the initiative to make things better: Leave it better than you found it!
  • Lead by example: Show them how to do it by your actions!
  • Think beyond the moment: What do you want your legacy to be?

Many years ago, I was introduced to the Basic Principles for Healthy Relationships. These have stuck with me and proved very helpful in my career.

Want to build trust, start with these. Have a conversation and don’t stop having conversations about these principles so that they get integrated into everyone’s way of behaving. Start your meetings with a reminder of what these principles are.

Did you know most people need to hear or see new information five to seven times to fully commit it to long-term memory.

Live and breathe them everyday, bring them to life by using them in every conversation that you have with others!

Ask yourself:

  1. What have you done today to demonstrate the basic principles?
  2. What could you do everyday to have a positive impact on your coworkers?
