Last month we talked about Giving Feedback, this month I would like to give you a way to receive feedback. First, let’s remind ourselves what Feedback is…
Feedback is helpful information we can offer each other.
It is information about how others are affected by our actions.
Receiving feedback can be difficult, especially if it is given in way that makes it hard for you to hear the message. One of the best things that you can do is to understand the meaning of feedback and then you can decide what you want to do with the it.
Start Here
When you have listened and through about the feedback, ask yourself, is there something that I could change to ensure that I get the reaction or result that I want. And, before getting into any conversation, be sure that you know what reaction you want from the other person? Always remember, you get to choose your impact!!
First – Listen
Calmly, attentively and objectively.
- Do not judge!
- Focus on the content – not on the person
- Avoid defending or explaining
- Just listen!
Paraphrase What You Think You Heard
“So, what I hear you saying is…..”
Ask others that you trust about what you heard.
Notice Your Own Reactions
Notice if you feel upset or defensive, and take a slow breath to stay calm.
Take Time to Think
Say you need time to process the words before you respoond.
Get Curious
Ask questions for clarification, ask for examples.
Evaluate the Potential Value of What You Heard
Ask Yourself:
- Is there something that you can learn from the feedback?
- What do you need to be mndful of going forward?
